Date: 12/31/2008
Looking along the area where the 2 track staging area will be. The area along the right hand side of the photo will have a couple of industry spurs - one of them will have a Flour Mill / Grain Silos industry, and the other will have a TOFC / COFC transfer facility.
Dec 2008 - Baseboard (2)
Date: 12/31/2008
This photo shows where some of the industry tracks will be on the module the staging tracks will be on. The roof of the building in the bottom right shows where that industry will be located. The staging tracks will go behind that building, and it will form part of the background which will hide the staging tracks.
Dec 2008 - Baseboard (3)
Date: 12/31/2008
This is the opposite end of the layout to where the staging tracks will be. This part of the layout is designed so it can be connected to my C&SFT layout and form a branch of that layout. When connected to the C&SFT, there will be a 2 or 3 car interchange track as well as the main track, the right of way shown curving away to the right in photo.
Dec 2008 - Baseboard (4)
Date: 12/31/2008
This shows the second module (the one which will have the ability to connect to the C&SFT layout. To the right of the building in the top of the photo there will be a runaround track. To the left of the building there will be an industry spur. The track in the bottom middle of the photo connects the industry spurs to the main track and run-around track.

The frames and baseboards for the two modules. These will connect together to form a 12 x 1 feet shelf layout.
The top of the module on the left will connect to the bottom of the module on the right.

Jan 09 - Flour Mill with track in place
Date: 12/31/2008
Flour Mill building. Grain Storage Silos will be added to the left of this building as part of the Flour Mill facility, making this industry the largest of the MWSL layout.
Jan 09 - Intermodal facility with track in place
Date: 12/31/2008
A GP20 eases past the Intermodal Tranship facility towards the Flour Mill. The Tranship Facility spur will hold 4 cars easily. The Flour Mill spur has a capacity of about 8 cars, but the industry would only require a maximum of about 4 cars at a time. The extra space on the Flour Mill spur can be used when switching cars on the other module.
Jul 09 - Flour Mill
Date: 07/12/2009
Flour mill building in place, with grey backscene hiding the staging tracks.
Jul 09 - Warehouse
Date: 07/12/2009
This is a Pola (?) kit, with weathering and some custom painting added. The track behind / above the track in the photo will curve around to allow connection to my CSFT layout. The turning loop can be seen to the right of the building.
Jul 09 - Loop area.
Date: 07/12/2009
Most of the layout can be seen in this photo - part of the staging area (top left), the backscene between the staging and flour mill / grain silos, the transfer track (top right), the turning loop (mid left), the warehouse (mid right), and the connection to the CSFT (bottom left).

Aug 2009 - Construction of Silos
Date: 08/08/2009
Start of the construction of the silos. The silos are made mainly from the PVC pipe an MDF sheeting.

The background hill before painting.
Aug 2009 - Construction of foreground hill.

A small foreground hill over the baseboard join. This hill will disguise the backscene which hides the staging tracks.
Aug 2009 - Cut out section
Date: 08/09/2009
This cut out section will have a small creek and some low lying land to give the layout more scenic diversity.
Aug 2009 - Background mountain.
Date: 08/09/2009
The background mountain is a low relief mountain made out of some spare 3/4 inch foam sheet I had lying around. The plan is to put some darker green trees in the foreground and scenic the area so the background hill will only be through the trees, etc.
Aug 2009 - Top of the silos
Date: 08/09/2009
The tops were cut out of MDF using a jigsaw. Behind the backscene, some cars in the staging are can also be seen.

Nov 09 - Chatham Passenger Depot
Date: 11/18/2009
This depot was last used on a layout I had quite some years ago, and was basically being stored away with little hope over ever being used. But then I saw a picture of the Chatham depot on railpictures.net, and it was a similar style to this depot, so I though it would be good to included the depot on the layout.

A reefer and pickle tank car await the attention of the coolstore staff.
Nov 09 - Layout Sign

Date: 12/14/2009
Dec 2009 - The warehouse with platform roof removed
Date: 12/14/2009
The platform roof on this model was too low to allow my freight cars and loco to pass. This meant that originally there was a large gap between the platform and the track. I didn't like that as it didn't look very realistic, so the roof had to go! And then I moved the building closer to the tracks.
Dec 2009 - Sawmill loading area
Date: 12/14/2009
When I settled on a track plan and where various industries would go, I was at a bit of a loss as to what to put in this space.
Recently I found out that Chatham does has some sawmills in it's vicinity, so I thought I would add a sawmill loading area. The sawmill itself isn't modelled, but the cut lumber ready to be loaded into a box car suggests that there is a sawmill nearby.
