Nameboard and scenery.

The grey nameboard is thin MDF, the letters are MDF purchased from a local home hardware shop, and the layout fascia is 3mm Plywood stained with a dark wood stain. And, yes, the K is upsidedown!

Most of the wood and buildings on the last few layouts I have had have been re-cycled from previous layouts. The industry featured in this photo was originally designed for the CSFT layout. For quite some time (sinde the CSFT was dismantled) it was not used on any layout but in August 2012 I removed the MDF backing and glued it to the Illinok module.

A BN local heading to Cicero,IL comprising a SW1500 and a leased Chessie caboose is almost hidden by the 40 foot DF boxcar waiting at the Jaxxs Snaxx freight platform. The track on the other side of the platform is also used by Jaxxs Snaxxs and the track in the foreground is the team track and drill track for the Coolstore Warehouse and Transload track.

The Jaxxs Snaxxs loading and unloading shed is mainly used for unloading covered hoppers and tank cars, but it also has a platform for transferring freight. A C&NW freight passes by heading towards Proviso yard while a SW1500 waits for the line to clear so it can head down the line to Dolton Industry Park.

Discussing what to do
Date: 09/07/2012
A few locals discuss what to do with the abandoned buildings on the east end of the indutry park. The buildings belonged to an old Steel Mill and the site is ripe for some urban renewal.
Abandoned buildings
Date: 09/07/2012
These old abandoned buildings were once part of a large Steel Mill. All the rest of the steel mill has long since disappeared, but these last few remnants remain. Apparently they have some historical significance and some of the local historians dont want them destroyed. (The buildings are based on some ruins of the old steel industry site at Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia).

The Calumet City trackage and industries were added to provide a little more depth to the Illinook scenery, and to provide some extra industries to switch. The Calumet City trackage is accessed by a switchback from a hidden staging yard behind the Dolton module.
